St. Johannes Lutheran Church

Charleston, South Carolina

130 Years of Ministry in the Heart of the City

From Our Pastor:

St. Johannes has throbbing economic pain and needs everyone’s help.  As the enclosed treasurer’s report will tell you, our monthly outflow and expenses far exceed our pledged income and other sources for funds.  This reminds me of a story of President Lincoln, who, while walking through the White House in the middle of the night, stubbed his toe.  He said, “I’m too old to cry, but it hurts too much to laugh.”  In the greater scale of things, our predicament feels a bit like stubbing our toe in the night.  We don’t need to cry, but, in the meanwhile, “it hurts too much to laugh.”

On top of our regular expenses (salaries, insurances, utilities, etc.) we are also trying to grapple with the debt that we are taking on to repair and renovate the parsonage property.  The work is almost done but several unforeseen structural problems have added an additional $13,500 to the overall cost of the renovation.  The entire project will probably cost us something over $75,000.

I want to lay before you several possible solutions, all (or some) of which, everyone can consider to get us through this painful toe-throbbing situation.

·        Reconsider your pledge if it is less than the amount you pay for dinner out one evening, the cost of your cell phone, or your monthly cable bill.  If your pledge is less, it’s probably too little.

·        Pre-pay a portion of your pledge by one or several months.  If everyone would do this, it would ease our current cash flow problems.  We will continue to need funds later in the year, of course, so having more than a few months paid in advance will put us in jeopardy further on.

·         Add a month to your current pledge or offering.  If you would consider a “13th Month” paid now for 2008, that would be a boost to our economy without depleting us of funds later in the year.

·        Give a “tithe” (10%) of the Government Economic Stimulus check of $600 all tax payers will receive in the next few weeks.  If 100 people would accept this challenge and send St. Johannes $60 – once they receive their rebate check – that would add an additional $6,000 to our bottom line.

Now is also a good time to think about the long-term future of St. Johannes and your hopes and desires for this church when you leave the earth.  Have you made provisions in your last Will and Testament for St. Johannes?  If every member were do that, designating a portion of your estate in your will or in a codicil attached to your will, those funds will honor your life and faith in the years ahead, long after you are gone.  Think of it as your pledge from heaven.  Problem is this has to be done while you are alive and well.  Remember, you can’t take it with you, but you can send it on ahead.

                                                            - Your pastor, Bruce Evenson

Pastor’s Class: an Old Testament Primer

Thursday Pastor's Class (4:45-5:25 each week before Taize) during May, will tackle the subject of the Jewish People in the First Millennium.  How did the unfolding history of Christianity, from the fall of Jerusalem through the Inquisition, change the lives of the Hebrew people and threaten the very survival of Judaism?  What we discover is that several historical events caused an unfortunate widening gap between Christians and Jews, who were initially intimately connected.

Habitat for Humanity "Lutheran House"

Work continues on the Lutheran House!  We're now down to the painting stage, and volunteers are still needed.  Targeted completion date is the end of June . . .

The family selected for the Thrivent Builds/Lowcountry Lutheran House is the Douglas-White family.  They will contribute 500 hours of ‘sweat equity’, 200 hours of which will be spent building their home alongside volunteers.

Volunteers are encouraged to sign up for one, two, or even more days and can bring a group or work as an individual.  Work commences at 8:00 a.m. each day.   To volunteer, you must register in advance by contacting Christa Lewis at Sea Island Habitat, at 843-768-0998, or outreach@seaislandhabitat.org.  If you are interested in finding out more about this great opportunity, contact Mary Lou Waitschies.

St. Johannes has been well-represented on this worthwhile service project.  A total of $315.00 was collected.  In addition, the following in-kind gifts have been secured through our efforts:

Ott Distributing:  Donated all HVAC equipment and materials (Lloyd Waitschies)

Refrigeration Service Engineers' Society:  Donated labor for installation of HVAC  (Lloyd Waitschies)

Palmetto Concrete:  Donated concrete for slab  (Stan Allison)

Calling all men!!!

Mark your calendars, and plan to join us on Monday evening, May 5th in Gatch Hall.  Come on out and join us!

From Elmore Marlow, President, Men’s Club:

The Men’s Club meets on the 1st Monday of each month, and members of the group have taken on several small projects during the past months around the church.  The stage doors in Gatch Hall and the door in the Taizé Chapel have been repaired.  Three crawl space vents were installed on the Sunday School building.  A section of the floor in the serving area next to the kitchen has been repaired. Pictures were hung in the ladies’ room.  A new vacuum cleaner and several broom sets were purchased; tools have been donated for the sexton’s closet, as well as two sections of scaffolding.  The newly installed ceilings in the hallway have been painted, and both the Shrove Tuesday pancake supper and Easter breakfast were prepared and served!  The possibility of refinishing the pews in the church is being investigated.  Anyone who has a project they would like to see done – or donate to any projects – please contact Howard Walker or Lloyd  Waitschies.  Any new member who attends the May meeting will get first choice of one of the delicious desserts which Marilyn Stehmeier prepares for each meeting!

Would you like to have your blood pressure checked ?
